The Man Group and Man AHL Interview Process

Man AHL runs centralized systematic research teams organized by strategy, and its interview tests coding, statistics and applied machine learning.

Man Group's systematic arm, Man AHL, organizes research into centralized teams built around specific strategy areas such as trend following and equity market neutral investing, rather than independent portfolio manager pods. A quantitative researcher joining Man Group is hired into one of these strategy teams, and the interview process is built to test research and coding skill within that specific domain.

Man AHL's structure places it closer to Two Sigma or AQR than to a pod-based multi-strategy platform, since a research idea developed by one team is typically evaluated and risk-managed through a shared process rather than a single manager's independent book. This gives researchers a longer runway to develop and test a signal before it needs to prove itself in live trading.

The contrast with a proprietary trading firm remains sharp. A market-making firm evaluates candidates mainly on pricing speed and probabilistic reasoning under a clock, while Man AHL's interview spends far more time on how a candidate would design, code and validate a systematic trading signal over a period of months rather than seconds.

Candidates commonly start with an online assessment covering coding, usually in Python, alongside probability and statistics questions. A recruiter screen and one or two technical phone interviews follow, testing statistical reasoning, coding ability and familiarity with systematic trading concepts such as signal construction and portfolio risk.

A later round typically includes several interviews covering machine learning, coding under a time limit, and a discussion of a past research project or take-home assignment, often followed by a conversation with the strategy team's senior researchers to assess fit with that team's specific focus.
