Quant Finance Jobs in Amsterdam and the Market Making Cluster

Optiver, IMC Trading and Flow Traders anchor Amsterdam's options market making cluster, and the city runs on English with a favorable visa route.

Amsterdam is the center of European options market making, anchored by three firms headquartered in the city, Optiver, IMC Trading, and Flow Traders, each of which grew out of trading on the floor of the Amsterdam options exchange before expanding globally. A graduate targeting Amsterdam should expect an interview process built around the same mental arithmetic and probability testing used at these firms' other offices, run in English regardless of the candidate's nationality.

Optiver and IMC Trading both run their global headquarters from Amsterdam and use the office as the primary training ground for new options traders before some are later transferred to Chicago, Sydney, or Asian offices. Flow Traders specializes in market making for exchange-traded products, including ETFs and exchange-traded commodities, and its Amsterdam office remains the center of its global trading operation even as it has expanded into US and Asian listings.

All three firms hire large graduate cohorts each year, and the Amsterdam office of each is substantially larger than its offices elsewhere, which means a first-year trader based in the city works alongside a much bigger peer group than an equivalent hire in a smaller regional office.

Jump Trading and DRW Trading both run Amsterdam offices covering European market hours, extending their Chicago-based futures and options franchises into the local exchanges, and these offices tend to be smaller and more selective than the anchor firms above. A candidate interviewing at one of these smaller Amsterdam desks should expect a similarly technical process but a narrower set of open roles in a given year, since headcount at a satellite office grows more slowly than at a firm's primary hub.

Both firms run a much smaller Amsterdam graduate class for these satellite desks than Optiver or IMC Trading run for their own headquarters, and the number of openings in a given year depends heavily on how the firm's broader European strategy is developing, so a candidate should confirm current headcount plans directly with the recruiter rather than assume a fixed annual intake.
