Quant Finance Jobs in New York and the Firm Landscape

New York holds the largest concentration of prop trading firms and multi-manager pods in the world, and the two employer types work very differently.

New York carries the largest concentration of both proprietary trading firms and multi-manager hedge fund pods anywhere in the world, and a graduate searching for a quantitative role there will move between two very different employer types inside the same few square miles of Manhattan. Citadel, Two Sigma, and Jane Street each maintain large New York offices, and each represents a distinct model for how a quant career in the city actually runs.

Jane Street's New York headquarters is the center of its global ETF and options trading business, and it remains one of the largest employers of quantitative traders and researchers in the city by headcount. Hudson River Trading, Tower Research Capital, Virtu Financial, and GTS all run high-frequency and market-making operations from New York, competing on execution speed and infrastructure across US equities, options, and futures. These firms hire heavily from computer science and applied mathematics programs and weight the interview process toward mental arithmetic, probability, and systems design rather than economics.

Five Rings, a smaller but well-regarded options trading firm, and Citadel Securities, the market-making arm of Citadel, both run substantial New York desks alongside their Chicago and Miami operations, and a candidate applying across several of these firms in the same cycle should expect significant overlap in the early technical screening rounds.

Citadel, Millennium Management, Point72, Balyasny, and ExodusPoint run the largest multi-manager platforms out of New York, allocating capital to individual portfolio managers who each run a small team of quantitative researchers and analysts against a defined risk budget. Cubist, Point72's quantitative strategies arm, and Verition Fund Management both run systematic and statistical arbitrage books from the city as well. A quantitative researcher joining a pod is typically hired directly into a specific team rather than a firm-wide rotation, so the quality of that one team matters more to career outcomes than the platform's overall reputation.

Renaissance Technologies and PDT Partners, both associated with some of the longest-running systematic strategies in the industry, are based just outside the city in East Setauket and inside Manhattan respectively, and both recruit almost exclusively from mathematics, physics, and computer science PhD programs for research roles.
